I spent the last couple days binging Alone in the Dark (2024), and despite a lot of flaws, I love it, for the story most of all. It's been a while since I've been so interested in dissecting a story like this. Well, there's a developer commentary for the game, but it's PAID DLC. That is egregious.

First game completed in 2026: Mega Man X3! This was the toughest challenge out of the SNES trilogy, especially the final boss. I don't know anything about the development history, but it feels like some ideas in this one were not fully fleshed out. It was definitely enjoyable though!

I can't say the same for the entirety of Stranger Things 5, but the series finale was 10/10.

My new to me retro game of the year 2025: StarTropics This game hit so many of the notes that make video games my favorite past time: open-ended adventure, challenging action, brain-exercising puzzles, a beautiful world to explore, and great chip tunes. I recommend it to anyone who loves the NES.

In Zelda 2, a woman appears in each town, beckoning Link into her home. They disappear inside and Link's health begins to refill. One reddit user recently asked if this scene was *intentionally* suggestive. While that seems very unlikely, I thought I'd look into it.

I played all the way through the recently preserved final build of the unreleased port of Resident Evil 1 for Gameboy Color.

The new batch of Stranger Things episodes is SO much better than the first half of the season, and there's things that make baffling choices there make sense now. ST is best when each season is a self-contained story like a really long film. I'd be enjoying S5 more overall if it wasn't broken up.

I went into massive stream overtime to finish Alone in the Dark last night, and I'm proud to say I did it! And without having to look anything up! I've always wanted to play this for its influence on Resident Evil, but I never realized the sheer amount of stuff RE takes from it!

I just played through Super Mario Land 2 for the first time in many years while listening to a summary of the really wild manga. What a nice gaming session this was.

Something that gets brought up now and then in the retro gaming sphere is the childhood experience of using a game as a space to simply exist in. I'd run around Hyrule the same way I would my backyard. It's hard to engage with games like that today, but I try to be intentional about it.

I just finished Shinobi: Art of Vengeance. I think this game was very bloated, and wasn't sure what it wanted to be. Sadly, I'd have to say it doesn't live up to the Genesis games.

Just played my first ~hour of Metroid Prime 4. It is incredibly beautiful, like the full realization of a beauty only hinted at in the rest of the Prime games.

How amazing is this? VGHF - found a never-before-seen NES prototype - obtained the rights - finished the game using period-accurate tools - is releasing it physically through iam8bit as a charity fundraiser.

I listened to this and immediately bought the game. Can't wait to dive into it.

Checked out a retro game shop near my parents' place today and I found some cool things including two more games towards my PS2 launch title collection!
