The origin of Memorial Day observances took place in Charleston, South Carolina at the unintentionally ironically-named Race Course there. So, to some degree, Memorial Day is the legacy African Americans honoring the sacrifices of those who died to see their freedoms and rights recognized.

Curious and worrisome

Trump is putting no effort into becoming less unpopular but a TON into putting elements of a coup in place. Some of them may remain invisible, but the ones we can see point to his general approach: violent intimidation + corrupt judges + executive branch and congressional coconspirators + bribes.

Stephen Colbert is testimony to the lasting and irresistible appeal of light, as opposed to power. He (and his staff) are not powerful. Which is why they could be cancelled. “If you strike me down, I will become more [bright] than you can possibly imagine.” He is cancelled. But undiminished.

Question for gardeners and landscapers: Just planted two serviceberry bushes this week. Deer just denuded them overnight. Just as they'd done with my lilacs a few years back. Ace Hardware sells deer repellant: does it work? Or are there better solutions? REALLY want to keep these shrubs.
