Every year December kicks off in a disappointing way. Why we don't fully maximize all four existing transit lines by running them more frequently and temporarily augmenting existing dedicated bus lanes on all sides of the park is nothing short of mind blowing.

New research compares the use of electric and regular bikes in DC's Capital Bikeshare network. Conclusion: E-bikes make bikeshare better. "E-bikes enable broader dispersion across the city by connecting more distant bikeshare stations and supporting extended mobility."

I'll repeat my opinions here and suggest that multimodal street design should consider both fast movers and slow movers in urban environments. Bio-mechanical and E-assist have slightly different needs and deserve to be considered equally. E-motos are just motorcycles.

City staff will be accepting input until Sept. 15th, 2025 and I hope people will support the parking fees as it will help provide much needed funds for the park while discouraging gratuitous car trips in the neighborhood. Traffic and pollution cause by park visitor can be a lot for Uptown.

Once you accept that the fact that all other modes besides cars benefit from extra space beyond the sidewalk it becomes clear that the current standards for bike lane design are inadequate in urban areas. The 5' separate lane isn't great for urban areas with a broad array of user speeds.

This bank of the Seine in Paris was a former expressway. The good consequence is that there are ramps originally made for cars to access it, not just stairs or old cobblestones ramps. And then you can see people in wheelchairs in the crowd there, like in this photo.

Opponents of lower speed limits in cities often argue that they would actually increase emissions. But it's actually a lot more complicated than that. This study looks into it properly and finds that they can reduce emissions by 10%
