For a lot of people- the worst, most politically damaging thing Biden ever did was have a bad stutter during a debate months before the election. After that, people still supporting him were obviously heinous evil people. No better than Trump supporters.

If a progressive wins the primary, vote Democratic in November. If a moderate wins the primary, vote Democratic in November. If a socialist wins the primary, vote Democratic in November. Really. Vote for any D over any R.

I then told them to go read
@scientificdiscovery.dev
substack about advances in treatment, plus pointed them towards two books (emperor of all maladies and the cheating cell) to clarify why there probably won’t be any general cancer cure.

Maybe this is outdated or maybe Hobbes is extremely good faith but the meta analysis i found uses 5% weight loss as cutoff and while i cant tell from the tables what percentage lost that much or more since the coeff is part of a random effects model...15% seems more likely a high end than mean

Our household has probably a bit under 200k in retirement funds + other savings so Elons would equate to use giving 128 dollars in our lifetime. We clear that basically every month

Oh, the other serious answer to this is that I really do think national borders are a source of enormous toxicity and that actually winning is going to require addressing that, in some way that absolutely no one is ready for lol

This articulates something I sometimes find hard to when people who don't trust "science" bring up criticisms I share but then come to conclusions I find utterly baffling that they think obviously follow.

Bluesky in a nutshell. Some context: BLS released its jobs numbers today, which were better than expected, and resistance libs would rather stay mad/conspiratorial than listen to actual on-the-ground experts that the data is still reliable.

This is also why I am skeptical of the "ban children from phones" conventional wisdom. Eventually kids grow up, this isn't going away or getting less complex to navigate. By all means, we need to talk to kids and do other things to help

Now, the other way that all of this is ethos, maybe, is that the authority of these forms of argument doesn't come from any kind of From First Principles Reason That, itself, is about the character of the American Republic. These are legal authorities, and other things are not, purely by convention

“We’re the most powerful country in the world and we have the most obese, fudgy people.” The fatness claim is incorrect. The national rankings differ, but the US is usually in the teens. We’re on the high end, but we’re not the fattest nation on earth. I’ll take fudgiest, though

My spouse has worked in homeless services for a decade and has always been interested in the policy side and hoo boy is it not at all the case that front line workers have accurate views on housing policy. The relevant policy problems are largely irrelevant to the work of a social worker day to day

There are only 2 real responses to housing scarcity. You can either build enough homes to accommodate everyone or start drawing up a list of “undesirable demographics” to exclude. I know which side I’m on.

If you are wondering, what's with the wildly trad framing of this stuff? The usccb defunding Catholic journalism made it so that all the legacy career Catholic journalists that secular press use as sources are now replaced by our own Catholic brands of the Free Press

JUST IN: Democrats flip a red seat in the Texas Senate. Taylor Rehmet wins against Leigh Wambsganss, a conservative activist who helped lead right-wing efforts to take over TX school boards. With all early vote, and 95% of precincts, in, Dem up 57/43. Trump won this seat by 17% in Tarrant County.

Look, you can be mad at Biden. Plenty of reasons to in fact, but he dominated Obama on basically every issue. Maybe you can say "well he failed at the more important time" but A.) the American public failed him B.) 2016...was in retrospect a bigger fumble imo

There is more of Christ in the pinky finger of an immigrant in fear or the activist putting their body on the line than in most Catholic Masses I have seen lately. And I am not talking just a symbol. I mean the body and blood of Christ Jesus.
