I just taught my lecture course on mid-20th c US history, which starts with Harding and concludes with Nixon. For the first time, I had to pause and stress that those scandals were actually shocking at the time and, whatâs more, that Americans actually demanded people be held accountable.

The right spent decades screaming "Everything the mainstream media says is a lie, don't trust them!" then even gullible well-intentioned journalists ask "How can we rebuild trust?" and they think solid reporting will do the trick. That completely misunderstands what brought us to this point.

Senators like Kaine should resign mid-term, but insofar as they wonât, they ought to serve as archetypes for candidates who need to lose their primary elections. This kind of irresolute wimpiness ~entirely explains Democratsâ historically consequential failures in the Trump era.

part of that is listening in a deep way â in a way that you wonât capture with issue polling. you have to ask yourself what is the underlying concern? is it that voters have a firm view of, say, the deficit? or does the deficit represent a set of larger worries. if the latter, you speak to *that*.
