"comparison is the thief of joy" tell yourself that BEFORE you start comparing my beautiful hubble telescope to your new gen fancy smancy telescope again. Think about how that would make her feel. She has been the greatest for the longest of time and we owe her the world

Today we say goodbye to ESA’s Milky Way-mapper Gaia! The Gaia spacecraft has completed its sky-scanning and will be switched off this morning.

The end of Gaia observations will be a sad day, but I think it's also something worth celebrating, as Gaia has been an incredibly successful mission. And best of all, the data is completely open and free for anyone to access - it's a monumental triumph of open science. 🔭

If Gaia has a million fans, then I am one of them. If Gaia has ten fans, then I am one of them. If Gaia has only one fan then that is me. If Gaia has no fans, then that means I am no longer on earth. If the world is against Gaia, then I am against the world.

yknow cows used to be spherical. nowadays they are elongated, filamentary. And sometimes they don't even collapse anymore. true astrophysics is dead.

Optimist: The cup is half full Pessimist: The cup is half empty Astronomer: In this work, we propose HoFITCh (HOw Full Is That Cup), a Bayesian model for sampling the fullness of cups from imaging data and prior beliefs. We sample the posterior of our model, and find that the cup is 50±2% full.

Another truly joyous addition to April's astro-literature. I always felt that affinity between the red giant branch and farfalle. I disagree with the authors use of Lasagne for the main sequence though - those multi pasta layers should have been reserved for the Asymptotic Giant Branch. 🔭
