Got mad enough about Best Mobile at TGA that I went looking for great mobile games I’d missed this year. Led me to Pup Champs, the latest game from the Railbound/Golf Peaks dev. Excellent puzzle game so far. Can’t believe I missed this one.

Have a lot to trash about TGA but I will say that I'm pleasantly surprised by the Best VR field this year, which actually feels like a proper VR field for once and not a "best PS5 games that got VR modes." Happy for the Midnight Walk and Ghost Town teams. Little weird Lumines missed the cut though!

Two things can be true: 1.) The Game Awards are meaningless and we shouldn't take them all that seriously. 2.) Award shows of its scale DO rewrite the mainstream history of the art form, whether they deserve to or not, and its okay to care that it's so thoughtless despite having that responsibility.

I know, I know, Discourse is bad and all that. Can I just take ONE minute to vent? This year's Innovation in Accessibility Award represent the same issue EVERY year with TGA – it's ALWAYS AAA games that have the best marketing.

Absolutely. But, then again, by selling d2c Valve doesn't have to pay retailer margins. Same kind of thinking had many publishers create their own PC digital storefronts to not pay Valve a cut to sell on Steam. Maybe Valve will decide selling at retail is worth that cut, like pubs did for Steam.
