Yesterday in Vienna, I was just walking past a sign that read NOTAUSGANG (emergency exit, or literally "exit in case of distress") when I heard a guy, clearly American, address the counterintuitivity of being asked to leave through something so clearly labeled as 𝘯𝘰𝘵 an exit. One Democratic lawmaker (Melissa Hortman) and their spouse killed, another one (John Hoffmann) and spouse in critical condition. Targeted shootings in two separate Minnesota locations. Both the state Senate (Hoffmann) and House (Hortman) are currently tied between Democrats and the GOP.

I just reviewed my own 2022 Fulbright proposal. It features terms like "masculinity", "gender", "misogyny", "homophobia", "ethnic chauvinism", "nationalism", "sexism", and "ethnic minorities" - any of which, according to this article, might have knocked me out of competition had I applied this year.

As a Fulbright alum, I find this deeply unsettling. I firmly believe in academic exchange as a means 2 promote intercultural understanding, a sense of global citizenship, justice, and inclusion. (Which is why I also oppose academic boycotts that primarily punish people upholding these exact values.)
