That being said, a progressive framework for the world, whether it is hypocritically enforced or not, is always better than a might makes right approach. But it requires dismantling imperial power and radically transforming social relations to create real democratic international institutions.

With Trump's announcement that the liberal rules based order is dead, the US has dropped all pretenses & abandoned any moral architecture that once may have limited its actions to more hypocritical covert ops. Now it is fully emboldened to act as it wants, hence the threats to both enemies / allies

Gaza was the real last straw for many. More recently it was European powers condemning Trump for threatening Greenland while praising him for his actions in Venezuela, which gives the game away. The US has never truly seen Europe as allies, but as a subordinate partner it can use to impose its will

As you can see, it's not just about Trump signing a few documents to end international law, it's about a system that never had legitimacy in the eyes of the global south, and has slowly lost legitimacy in the eyes of the West, with the past 25 years having multiple points of realization.

I obviously won't list every infraction, but in recent memory there was Bush and the illegal invasion of Iraq, Obama and his toppling of the Libyan government, Biden and the genocide in Gaza, and most recently Trump and his takeover of Venezuela. The US has never played by the rules and never will.

The United States history post the WW2 order is littered with human rights violations, slavery, genocide, war, regime change and poverty. All of this violence inflicted on the global south was in violation of international law, with the aim to accumulate capital for its own ruling class.

Granted, this order did lead to progress on human rights, sovereignty, self-determination, & conflict resolution through law, but it was always a selective instrument of imperial power that was wielded by Western powers to enforce domination and extraction through "free trade" and "property rights"

Many of the institutions founded to uphold the rules based international order were created by the parties that gave you the Platt Amendment, Sykes-Picot, the Balfour Declaration and the League of Nations Mandate System. Essentially a gentlemen's agreement among Western Powers on how to rule.

The US dismantling international law, cooperation, and the rules based order is often framed as being dismantled overnight, but as anyone in the Global South can tell you, the so called rules based order was always about the US creating the rules, and the rest of the world having to follow. 🧵1/ 9
