Something that was pretty troubling about all of this -- besides the nature of the content, of course -- was the nonchalance and even glee with which this stuff was generated, like it was all just one big meme. Felt like a normalization/mainstreaming of some of the worst parts of digital life.

A lot of this was directed at online models and sex workers, which is deeply troubling as sex workers already face a disproportionately high risk of violence and homicide. Several users expressly asked Grok to make women "look scared" in the sexualized images.

Earlier this week, a large number of X/Twitter users started using Grok to create nonconsensual nude and sexualized images of real women and alleged girls. While digging through this content, we noticed a subcurrent of users asking Grok to depict women in degrading and/or violent scenarios.

The Government coming off X is the bare minimum and realistically at this point I think we should seriously be looking at taking enforcement action against the company, in line with the Online Safety Act and VAWG Strategy. I will be pressing the Government on this when Parliament returns next week.

I used to love Twitter, even if I had to really reign in my shitposting when I got elected. It used to be genuinely useful professionally too. It has long ceased to have any positive net benefit, either individually or societally, and anyone in public life who thinks otherwise is kidding themselves.

There is, to my mind, no justification for the continued use by the UK Government of X as a platform for official comms. There hasn't been for some time, in fact, but if the latest developments around AI-generated image abuse and CSAM don't change the policy I really don't know what will.

When I clicked through onto the FB pages of one of the white nationalist promoters of this event I was surprised (and it takes a lot to surprise me) to see that she was friends with several OR Republicans who either hold elective office or hold official positions in their county parties.

I suspect that turnout will be quite modest, but it's worth noting that at least one GOP candidate in the gubernatorial primary (and current county commissioner) is slated to speak. I've seen a few straight up white nationalists promoting the event on social media, and also lots of GOP electeds.
