I enjoyed a great talk by Tim Kersjes at #WCRI2026. Researchers should be careful when interpreting papermill "labels" in databases; the papermill classificarion is not sufficiently standardised, and in the age of generative AI the lines between fake and just low quality are increasingly blurred.

Publication Integrity Week day 2. Today's topic: Competing Interests. Competing interests are often poorly defined and poorly understood, and different journals may have different policies and requirements for the declaration of competing interests.

Research integrity and pub-ethics investigations are different. The former investigates culpability, whereas the latter focusses on the reliability of the scholarly record. Swift corrective action is only possible if we decouple culpability from reliability when investigating pub-ethics concerns.
