Ultimately the objectionable imagery isn't the problem; you can make objectionable imagery with a pencil. The problem is the ability to very trivially aim that at someone else in public like a weapon.

I do think there's a significant step up in awfulness between "GAN image generators let people generate objectionable imagery" and "a major social media platform incorporates such a generator into itself such that users can generate objectionable imagery easily and in public"

I've made it a personal goal to stop using the term "content" when referring to media made by artists. The word implies mass-produced filler and calling someone's hard work their "content" has started to feel kinda like an insult. Like human art made strictly for quick consumption

the Christopher Anderson story that the menswear guy posted the other day has been on my mind a lot during this. artistic practice, no matter the medium, is *practice*. it’s a way of being in the world, and as Austin says a set of skills the artist brings to bear.

Been thinking on the use of GenAi for mood boards. Ethics and legal risks aside, I truly believe using GenAi as references deprives one of many pivotal things. Here’s a blurb on what I mean:
