I’ve come up with a new format that I’m naming after one of my heroes, John Cage. This is kind of a joke but also serious. Here’s how it works: find the cards you’ve intentionally drafted over the years or buy cards that you think would be good draft picks. Shuffle them together and draft.

My favorite part about MTGO Vintage Cube discourse is when people point out new cards that provide novel and fun gameplay patterns but then just say “yeah but it won’t be good enough compared to all these boring cards we’re required to play with.”

I finally got the chance to draft this (regular team draft, not roto) and my takeaway was that there were too many basics.

If you break it down in basic resource terms, Vivi essentially generates ~2.5 mana every time you cast a noncreature spell. That goes a long way to show how insanely broken the card is.

One of the most logical answers to over a year of completely bunk constructed formats and an expressed unwillingness to fix the problem is that WotC doesn’t actually want you to play Magic, and in fact to them, playing Magic is a distraction from the desired activity of purchasing Magic.

How many times does this have to happen for people to realize that the quality of the gameplay is not a primary concern for Wizards?

With EOE coming out (and looking pretty cool), I spent some time tidying up A Study in Harmony. The changelist here is massive, but I think the whole project stays true to its concept.

My favorite part of contemporary Magic design is that they created the templating of “once per turn” and “one or more” then just made rares that completely disregard this innovation.
