The pandemic was more predictable than Trump.

From a negotiating perspective, racing to the White House to offer concessions is not the best strategy. That’s what Trump is counting on, but domestic pressure on him to compromise will continue to intensify, particularly if major US trade partners use this moment to match his tariffs.

Trump is a master marketer. Countries hit by his tariffs should take a page from his playbook and call them “US import taxes”, which is what they are. And any retaliation should be called a “reciprocal” measure to match US import taxes. Don’t let him define your actions.
