Day 1316 of Russia's war of choice is well underway. Having been locked in a studio, I'm only just managing to get today's daily thread started, so a lot to catch up on. Thanks or the wait - hope it's worth it!

Ukraine's security service today named a Russian general whom they say ordered the explosion of the Kakhovka dam. Vladimir Omelyanovich is accused of organising the mining of the power plant's dam in occupied Kherson region in June 2023. An unknown number of people were killed.

That grinding sound you are hearing is the Ukrainians relentlessly dissecting arguably the most important part of the Russian economy. And they are doing this with almost no help from their partners--indeed the US has tried to stop them from attacking into Russia.

Increasingly seems to me the conversation we should be having on Ukraine is how do we avoid the West 'doing a Bosnia' i.e. leaving Ukraine with a terrible deal by agreeing to the first thing Russia proposes when it finally, really does talk peace, as it may not be as far off as we think.

It was not exclusively created for peace, it was also a response to the main geopolitical threats of the time. As discussed (in part) here:

Europe’s founders very much intended it to play a role in the continent’s defence, but politics forced them to slow-walk the idea.

You are missing the bigger picture: It's the impunity. It's the privilege. It's a new class of citizens, above the rest. P.S. Even a large picture: it's a new selection process. Selection of the new elites.

A lot of conversation I see about the post-war revolve around "what to do with Russia?" I don't care. I think it's the wrong conversation to have. Far more important is to focus on promises we made to Ukraine. E.U and NATO membership in particular.

The main intrigue with 86% of votes tallied seems to be whether the unionist PPDA, which outperformed opinion polls and is linked to the Romanian illiberal right, will make it into the parliament. Otherwise, it looks like PAS will be stronger than BP+Alternative+PN combined.
