If we're talking about "material harmful to minors," I'm not all that keen on kids reading Mein Kampf or The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. But I'll be damned if I'd ever force adults to get permission from the government to access them.

The attacks on pornography are, as they've been in the past, a Trojan Horse to push forward otherwise unpalatable censorship legislation. Stand up to it as such.

There are dozens of these laws being pushed forward at the state-level, ostensibly targeting "porn." The attacks on the adult industry are bad enough and we should stand up for the rights of those engaged— or consuming! — adult content. But do not believe for one second that this is where it stops.

And if they don't think it's acceptable in a library or a bookstore, why would they suddenly think it's acceptable information to access online? Or on Netflix? Or CBS? Or Disney? Given the past few months, I'm not all that convinced corporate media wouldn't simply fold.

Librarians are being threatened with lawsuits or jail — or violence — for not proactively removing offending books.

Conservative states are already systematically using THE SAME "harmful to minors" standard at the state level to ban LGBTQ+ books, literature with passages about sexual activity, sex ed that discusses masturbation or sexuality (those that deal with race appear to be disproportionately targeted).

They will say—and weaker Dems will say— "oh, this is just about protecting kids from actual pornography. They're not *really* going after LGBTQ+ content, or sex scenes in literature or sex education!" Forty days into this administration, I beg you to take them at their word: they want to and will.

Unlike some of the state age-verification laws, many of which are being challenged in court, SC be enforced by the FTC, which has the ability to levy fines, raid business and freeze bank accounts. Which makes it very hard to fight back.

Conservatives at groups like Heritage Action are not shy about how broadly they define pornography. Drag queen story hours, for instance.

Any site that has any amount of material "harmful to minors" would be forced to employ surveillance tech (biometric scans, ID uploads, background checks) to prevent minors from accessing "pornography." You will not be surprised to learn that this is backed by the Heritage Foundation.

I think it's REALLY important to highlight that this isn't JUST censorship, it's also a way to identify queer people. Think about it, if you want access to queer sites, you'll need to provide evidence of who you are, which they can then slap onto a list of people suspected to be "harmful to minors"
