Birds which would previously come to that garden to sing (and yes, maybe also steal laundry sometimes) now stay away, frightened by a music format containing the voices of their ancestors. The music fan hears no local birdsong, so they buy another ambient CD, and the cycle continues in this way.

An ambient artist records some birds and releases the birdsong on CD. A music fan buys the CD and listens to it for many years until the CD is scratched, at which point the music fan "recycles" the CD by hanging it in a tree to scare away birds that were stealing their berries or drying laundry.
