I wrote more words about how it feels to be a translator watching the games press report on AI and labor, coming from a field that's fought these battles for decades. It may look like I'm beating up on one outlet, but it's not about them; I've been trying to write this for me and my peers all year.

"This use of GenAI is fine because VAs signed contracts to relinquish their rights". Well yeah, have you seen what happens to those who don't want to sign off on this? Can you really call that consent when the alternative is losing (or never getting) a job?

i am so, so tired of the concept of a "perfectely serviceable" localization. we, as a society, should stop settling for "well, it's understandable so it's good enough" when the bar could be so, so much higher. it's hard, HARD work and i would never discredit that, because i know how tough it is

If you're wondering how this will go Square Enix handed off their mobile Octopath game to NetEase who immediately started using ChatGPT to translate everything resulting in text like this. When players complained they started asking fans to fix their translations in exchange for in-game currency

Because SE's QA people are probably not in a position to defend themselves and their jobs in public, I want to spell out some of what it is they specifically do for us localizers, because nothing I've written here is rhetorical. SE QA acts as a final check on our work after translation and editing.

A very vivid rebuttal to the v. common refrain of MTL-main fanslators: "well, it's better than nothing!" It literally is worse than nothing. It's one thing to do it for personal consumption (your funeral ig) but spreading it around ends up indirectly making the tools you used even worse

Andrew Dice (SpaceDrake) took a massive risk bringing over EasyGameStation titles at a time when “doujin” had almost zero visibility. It was a joy to see those games succeed! 10 years ago, he shared his burnout story, so it’s a triumph that he was able to come back for SRW Y. Rest in peace.

Absolutely devastated by this news. SpaceDrake was no doubt a huge influence in drumming up interest for Japanese indie games localized into English and pushing for them on digital distribution storefronts like steam. Huge loss. Might be time for another playthrough of Recettear in his honour.

With projects wrapping up, I will have some freedom in my schedule to take on more translation-related work from mid-October onward.
