She was in her 40s. A resident doctor. Older than all her peers, she was different. She was the one who left on time and didn't bend over backwards to do more. Eyes rolled. People tutted. She wasn't committed. She lacked dedication. Then I became that woman. 🧵👇1/3

Imagine waking up every morning, stepping outside and being greeted by this crowd. I'm very fortunate 💕. Plus, my mental health is better for it.

It's too easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life. I needed a reminder today to just slow down and take a breath.

I set out to be a clinical doctor forever. Then life happened. I left medicine and, with that, felt completely lost. I have now found my way again, Navigating a path less trodden, But no less fulfilling. Careers are not linear.

Today was my last day at RCPCH. The end of another chapter in my very 'alternative' medical career. There's more than one way to be a doctor, You just have to be willing to take a risk or two.

On my way up to Edinburgh for my last RCPCH Thrive Paediatrics event. 2 years of empowering, educating and supporting paediatricians to improve their wellbeing and working lives. Who'd have thought I'd be doing this, But here I am! The next chapter approaches...

I was a junior trainee. He was my senior. Inappropriate sexual comments, propositions, looks... I didn't know what to do and feared the consequences of telling someone... So I did nothing. We must prioritise creating sexually safe environments.

Exactly 2 years ago, I found the courage to join a choir. I've made friends, Reconnected with a hobby I loved as a child, And embraced my love of musicals. Today we started an 11 minute Wicked medley. Amazing! 🎵

3yrs ago, I couldn't go to the supermarket without feeling overwhelmed & panicked by all the people. This is me today, At one of Paris' busiest tourist destinations. I've managed the eurostar, the metro, buses... I wasn't sure I'd ever do this stuff again, But here I am!

Good listening isnt just a skill you can pick up from a workshop or a list of '10 top tips'. It's an ongoing commitment to understanding our selves, e.g., being aware of what pushes our buttons in different situations, & having courage to be really present & embrace our own vulnerabilities.

Some of you might know me from X, Where, for 8 years I didn't dare show my face, Too afraid of the stigma associated with mental illness. But 2024 was a big one for me, One where I finally felt able to be myself. So, as we had into 2025, I wanted to say, There is hope. Things can be different.

Wow well said Jess, absolutely 👏👏I think with things like reflective space there can be a guilt of attending, & also an anxiety oh 'how will it look?'- to be seen to have time to be still for an hour. It saddens me that execs don't prioritise attending things like schwartz rounds, to set an example.

Over the last few years, I've challenged the status quo, Advocated for wellbeing and Pushed for culture change. I've ruffled feathers and Been discouraged, But today I found out that my actions had genuinely saved lives. Don't let anyone make you believe you shouldn't share your story ✨️.

Access to regular reflective space- for support & critical thinking, is a core part of good care. Most people would agree with this. BUT it only happens where it's built in to standard working practice. As soon as it becomes an add-on, "nice to have if there's time", it ends up being de-prioritised.
