One of my Negro Leagues “hot takes” (if it even is that) is Sam Jethroe was a Hall of Fame talent. If he plays his entire career in either the Negro Leagues *or* AL/NL, I think he’s in. But he got stuck in the middle, with his stats split between two worlds.

HOFer Orlando Cepeda said his father, Perucho Cepeda, was a better player than him. But Perucho had a strong self-awareness and knew that he couldn’t tolerate the racial injustice in the mainland USA. So he rebuffed several offers from the American Negro Leagues and starred in Puerto Rico instead.

Perucho Cepeda is one of the greatest baseball players to play before MLB's integration. Although he never played in the United States, Cepeda dominated in Latin America, claiming two batting titles in Puerto Rico.
