Lee Dixon is doing a good job of making a bad game, worse

Watching: I promise you, if your wife never wakes up, I’ll take you to any restaurant you want.

I get why people are shitting on this but the cinema was air conditioned, Momoa was fun and it was less than 2 hours. So I thought it was fine.

As impressive as this film is, and it really is wonderfully done, transplanting Bergman to the upper class NY milieu left me frustrated at the pampered self obsession of the characters.

Second film of the night

I was 100% sure I watched this in school. I hadn’t: it’s hilarious and, for someone brought up in the 70s and 80s on a council estate in a new town, as nostalgic as it comes.

Not the most enjoyable film I’ve seen this film but certainly arresting in its style and originality. Not sure I totally get it.

Tonight’s film

Loved this. Intimate but sprightly, with Soderberghs nimble camera showing McKellen’s and Coel’s expressive faces to great effect. Their relationship is consistently interesting and the casting, perfect. Thematically diverse: life as performance, how it corresponds with art, loss and regret.

Tonight is this and a couple glasses of a very dry Chenin Blanc.

Without saying anything about politics I will say that, maybe, a degree of stability and patience might be a good idea at this point?

I have a tendency to cry but, my god, I practically weeped for 90 minutes. Film of the year. Like a softer, warmer Kelly Reichardt film.

At the movies for:

Rose of Nevada is a film of texture and colour and sound, the sort of film that works by pure feeling. It created an undeniable aura in the cinema, as the curtain drew across to create the boxy aspect ratio and the first rusty cleat and lichen covered boat skeleton appeared.

Just finished an excellent book by Malcolm Gaskill on an early witch trial in Springfield, Connecticut in the 1630s. It’s an incredibly effective insight into a distant time and place told through ordinary lives. ‘Only by taking the strange on its own terms can we understand ourselves in time’

Bought this on record shop day and it’s got to be one of the most beautiful albums ever made.

Feeling so cheerful this morning I just laughed at a Barney Ronay column in the Guardian.
