Hegseth, in an incredibly damaging move, is hollowing out the ranks of experienced officers. He has fired top general, Gen. Randy George, US Army Chief of Staff who has a great wealth and depth of knowledge. Firing such a person in the midst of a war is virtually unheard of.

Nine U.S. officials told NBC News that Hegseth has blocked or delayed promotions for more than a dozen Black and female senior officers across all four branches of the military.
