I thought this preprint was informative, if worrying. I don't think I have understood the age-period-cohort problem well, even though it's an old problem. In particular, it got me worried about the apparent time hypothesis we have been using in studying a certain kind of language change.

Another cool DH project on recent history of analytic philosophy by @bweatherson.bsky.social: brian.weatherson.org/quarto/posts... In response to his "experiment": the year with the most papers a lot of people were reading in grad school is actually a couple years after I finished—maybe 2012:

What's the answer? Well, in short, we don't really find evidence that there has been conceptual inflation of 'racist'. By contrast, we do find evidence of meaning change with other terms. We also float some hypotheses about why people think this has been happening when it probably hasn't been.

This is such a cool approach to meaning change! Very in favor of going beyond vibes. The normative question becomes: should we consider more things to be racist, while meaning by "racist" something fairly intense?

Is the term "racist" losing its meaning through overuse? Theorists and pundits across the political spectrum say that it is. But what evidence do we have that "racist" is "conceptually inflated" beyond mere vibes? @liao.shen-yi.org and I take a close look in a new paper: philpapers.org/rec/HANMCI
