I'm someone who spends a lot of time thinking about LLMs, and I have no idea how they would improve the selection of targets in a war. Except for one obvious affordance - they offload accountability.

this feels like a bad consequence of the broadening of 'enshittification' from a rentier phenomenon to a general diagnosis of the problems of the age

I hit my patience for Microsoft enshittification and reinstalled Ubuntu today. When I tried Ubuntu in the past, I didn't love it and quickly gave it up, but now Ubuntu has very clearly surpassed Windows 11 as the better work OS.

I desperately want to get back into gravel cycling and bikepacking, and I have everything I need except a bike frame. I do have a damaged steel frame, but as far as I can tell, the nearest frame builder is 3 hours away. So every few months I look up the price of steel frames and sigh.

The word "enshittification" was coined by Doctorow to mean a 3-step process popular in tech of luring in then profiting off consumers, but the word is broadening to mean any sort of product degradation So it's really interesting to see both uses coexist like this:

In a forthcoming paper we found little evidence that those persuaded by LLM-generated moral advice were evaluating the reasons in the advice in any meaningful way. Nor were they less persuaded by an LLM that had previously produced obviously flawed outputs

My favorite bit of engineering lore is that before the mid-20th century, instead of ball bearings, train axles were just stuffed with oily rags. Which would sometimes just catch on fire and could derail the train. Which is where we get the term "hot box".

After living as an American in the UK for a decade, my spelling is a mess. I sometimes swap from British to American spelling mid-sentence. Last week I submitted two papers only noticing during final proofreading that one was in American English and one was in British English.

Turns out you can blind Ring cameras with a WiFi deauthentication attack. You literally could not make up an easier way to disable them. Plus, with minimal technical knowledge and 5 seconds of googling, the cost to build a basic deauth device is actually closer £1.

Certain academics and commentators like to bitch and moan about words changing meaning. But here is genuinely a case where losing the original anti-capital meaning of "Luddite" has stripped people of hermeneutic power to explain their political opposition to AI.
