I agree that the US should not be a global leader but will go further: I don't think ANY country should be the "leader" of this world because this world—this specific version of the world—should, in no uncertain terms, no longer exist. Playing musical chairs with hierarchy isn't the solution.

The problem is fundamentally about power. One group of people has the power to quite literally deny housing to other people. It is as if they have taken housing hostage, and are demanding a ransom. Whether the ransom is "affordable" is irrelevant.

Keeping the housing supply too low for the population does raise rents and real estate values as people compete by trying to outbid others. But this does not create positive social value, it creates stress and social disorder. It has a net negative social value.

I would like every white person who says they like reading James Baldwin to read "On Being White...And Other Lies". And sit with it. Internalize it. (And leave your knight's armor in the closet. This is not an exercise in "I'm not like the others...")
