Bluesky is still small enough so that a few obnoxious people can invent rules and have their voices heard if they scream loudly enough ("How can you post about THIS FRIVOLITY now of all times???") and that is a problem but is also means it's fairly easy to block the major offenders.

I've also mentioned that so many people came here for political reasons, they lose sight of how to use social media like a normal citizen and either fear posting about hobbies due to scolds or they become scolds themselves. But again, Twitter has Mechahitler and meatspace Nazis

I think there's a lot of frustration when what worked on Twitter doesn't work here. My posts are very different between the two platforms, in my opinion. It was really hard at first because of no GIF support for AGES and I post GIFs heavily.

Now with a weakened block, I can't see myself back on there. (I am not sure why everyone just kind of rolled over and accepted that.) At my height, I had 36,000 Twitter followers. Not the biggest account but enough to feel like I was losing something, especially since so many were not migrating.

I joined Bluesky during the invite code era (I think July of 2023 or thereabouts) and pretty much only posted here between September and December of that year when I was dealing with a lot of medical issues. It was just calmer. I tried using Twitter again in 2024 but the difference was stark.

Because there is so much noise now, Musk's antics don't seem so dramatic by comparison. Everyone just kind of forgot about MechaHitler when it probably would have caused a spike. I'm not here to tell anyone where they should post but having been gone for a while, the vibe is bad on Twitter dot com.

I said so at the time. Basically, every major growth spike at Bluesky was triggered by Musk shenanigans (the Brazilian wave of last year, for example). A bunch of people try it, decide whether or not they like it, and wash back ashore on Twitter. Rinse, repeat.

Ah, the "Bluesky is dying" discourse is back. Bluesky has issues but Twitter has Nazis. The user spike we experienced post-election and inauguration was spurred along by Twitter departure related to disgust with Musk. Since Musk is on the outs, I think it gave a lot of people permission to return.
