Academic publishing is facing a major crisis with AI slop. Journal editors are being flooded with AI-generated submissions that are almost impossible to detect. It is getting harder it is for human reviewers to filter out the noise.

Making humans responsible for their AI use seems like an incredibly reasonable way to address problems & opportunities in the use of AI for academic research, at least in the short term (autonomous scientific work will require different solutions).

I've been on NIH study sections for >35 years. Today's is the most frustrating I've ever experienced. The decline in expertise of both the reviewers (many first timers) and the NIH staff (administrative confusion and mistakes) is really disheartening. I hate the collapse of American science.
