Additionally, to our knowledge, those investigating the outbreak have not identified rodents on the MV Hondius. The Hondius is an expedition ship that people can hop on and off of throughout the voyage, so we expected to see quite a few contacts that needed to be monitored for symptom development.

The chief of CDC’s Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) announced his retirement several months ago. The internal announcement only came out on May 7 because that’s just when the publication schedule allowed. He is an active duty USPHS officer, so retirement must be planned very far in advance.
