As President Michael D Higgins concludes two terms as President, and half a century in politics, the outpouring of appreciation for him - from people across Ireland and across the world - is wonderful to see. Yes, we can have a brave politics rooted in love.

I’d love to see this happen here more too. I haven’t participated in commercial Christmas for the last few years and, apart from being ethically and ecologically kinder, it’s a hell of a lot less stressful.

Until now, I’ve been in the ‘menopause is a natural process and I’ll see it through naturally’ camp (I never judged anyone’s else’s choices). Turns out though, giving up a coping mechanism you’ve had for more than 3 decades at the height of menopause can puncture one’s innocence very effectively.

I think there are real battles we need to “fight to win” But I also think the dominant culture is never going to get ahold of its destructiveness if we don’t learn to appreciate the importance of losing, releasing, mourning, of limitation.
