I’m thrilled to see the global economy still intact. I refuse to celebrate “record highs” from the market adjusting to us backpedaling on a lot of obviously terrible tariff policy. tl;dr if you break it, you shouldn’t be applauded when you fix it.

I’m just going to repeat it: We don’t have the capacity to make our own *penicillin*. We import 90%+ from China—as well as numerous essential drug ingredients. Our health care system relies on price stability. Targeted tariffs = astronomical costs + reduced access. It will break U.S. healthcare.

American beef has a quality advantage in the global marketplace, but chicken, soy, and to some extent pork are highly competitive industries. No way U.S. producers don’t take a big hit from this. China imposed a 25% tariff on our soy in 2018, and it cost our farmers almost $2B!

My concern here is it’s not exactly the GOP/MAGA playbook to reject elite circles, either. They’re just more skilled at moving between the glamorous and the everyday. There’s concrete downstream benefit to this in the form of high dollar networks and soft power.
