When governments feel secure with unchecked power, it becomes too easy to silence voices they don’t like. A healthier democracy ensures diverse perspectives are represented in Parliament itself, that’s what proportional representation delivers.

For whoever becomes the new Ontario Liberal leader: your first order of business must be demanding a proportional system so no party ends up with only 11% of the seats with 30% of the vote again. That's how democracy should be.

Our current system let one party take every seat in Regina and Saskatoon with just over half the vote. This is not about one election or one province. It’s about a system that rewards some while silencing others and leaving thousands voiceless. Demand proportional representation.

Pierre Poilievre is back in Parliament, but his win shows how our current system divides us. In Alberta, his victory fuels one-party dominance, while his former Ottawa seat is now part of the Liberals’ total dominance across the city. We need proportional representation.

Metro Vancouver proves it: First-Past-the-Post rewards parties with seat monopolies, not fair results. Proportional representation would give every voter a voice, and prevent whole regions from being painted one colour.

Because we use FPTP and because Poilievre is a very polarizing leader we can now expect Canada to be more polarized, which in turn, at election time, leads to more strategic voting. Polarization leads to more polarization which leads to pernicious polarization, so PR is vital to our society.

Green Party of Ontario leader Mike Schreiner sat down with Steve Paikin on The Agenda during the 2025 Ontario Election and talked about why Ontario needs proportional representation. It’s time to put voters first and build a stronger democracy for everyone.

In Saskatchewan and Toronto, voters choose a variety of parties. But under our current system, both regions are locked into one-party domination. This is not electoral justice. Proportional representation ensures fair results where every region is represented and every vote counts equally.

In 2025, the majority of campaign stops from both major leaders were in Southern Ontario. Our current system rewards catering to swing ridings, not representing the whole country. Proportional representation would change that.

Voters across Canada make diverse choices, but our voting system turns them into exaggerated “strongholds” where millions are left without a voice. Proportional representation would let every vote count, no matter where you live.

This is exactly why we need proportional representation. No party should be able to lock in power just by drawing lines on a map. Every vote should count equally, no matter where you live.
