I did not care for Fantastic Four at all. I found it completely lacking in feeling, with thin characters (and annoying performances,) dull villains, and a rote whiz bang ending without impact. The retro-futurism and score are good, but they’re wasted in service of mediocrity.

James Gunn’s Superman is a joyous, earnest, vitally optimistic superhero movie. It overflows with color, personality, and delightful corniness. The action is spectacular. David, Rachel, and Nic are perfect. An incredibly fun, smartly relevant film that oozes humanity. LOVED it!

The Monkey is wildly entertaining and delightfully brazen. Perkins continues to cement himself in horror lore; the craft here is fabulous. So violent, hilarious, and perfectly paced. Theo James excels playing dual roles. Its thoughts on death and family are fascinating.

Paddington in Peru is not without its charms - Olivia Colman is wonderful, there are some laughs - but it’s a sadly mediocre sequel lacking in wit and warmth. The jungle adventure plot is dull and rote, and Banderas’ character and performance are ghastly. A shame, indeed.

Just re-watched Paddington 2. This is legitimately one of my favorite movies. It’s perfect. And ever so briefly, my soul is healed.

Brave New World is so frustrating because Mackie is a great Cap and deserves better. But the movie around him is disjointed, overly-expository, and unfocused. A dull, annoying mishmash that feels held together by safety pins and Hulk BS. Lumbly is MVP but this movie is very bad.

Starting from the beginning. This show makes me happy. Not much else is right now.

I love Josh Ruben, I love slashers, and I adored Heart Eyes. This is a potent and wildly enjoyable cocktail of horror and romcom, with inventive and gory kills, likable characters, and an iconic new killer. It has so much zip, wit, and personality. A bloody joy.

I am done putting a single ounce of my energy out towards people I get even less than that back from. It’s a cruel, tough world, and at a certain point my kindness is not just up for grabs for everyone to take advantage of.

Companion is a ton of fun - clever, hilarious, bloody, full of twists and turns, featuring strong work from Jack Quaid, Lukas Gage, and Sophie Thatcher. A tongue in cheek indictment of tech bro culture and the rampant misogyny in our culture.

Soulful, powerful, surreal, hilarious. Cyrus is an incredibly intriguing and well drawn character. So many thoughtful notions, insightful musings, and delightful strangeness. So much of it hit me so deeply and personally.

It’s a hard lesson to learn, that you are but a cameo appearance in most people’s lives, there for a quick second but ultimately easily expendable, no matter how you may feel about them. There for a second, discarded the next, like a crumpled up candy wrapper. Invisible.

I wish I didn’t care as much. I wish I didn’t feel as deeply. I’m tired of feeling upset and hurt all the time.

I love films, and plays, and musicals, and television shows, and sports, etc. But nothing quite titillates my intellect and that tiny but boisterous sad voice that lives in the back of my skull quite like a beautifully composed sentence in a novel.

Recipe for the modern Broadway musical: Vaguely known IP + indie artist you’ve probably never heard of writing the score (who have never written a musical before) + a talented director. The combo works, maybe, 1/6th of the time. Something has to break.

Finally checked out Mufasa. I HATED 2019’s Lion King, but this is pretty good! It has heart, camp/cheese, strong voice work, visual style, good songs (Lin!), and the animals actually emote. Well played, Barry Jenkins.

Football sucks. The NFL is the worst pro league by a significant margin. College football is somewhat more tenable.

This may be Hendrix’s best work yet. It’s heartbreaking and terrifying in such a palpable way, filled with wonderful characters and immense anxiety. It’s also deeply, darkly funny and so smart about societal, gender, and generational mores. The 70s setting is utilized perfectly.

Presence is a deft exploration of form. Soderbergh’s camera brilliantly floats and plays with such detail. An intimate, tight, and haunting story of ghosts and familial dysfunction, with nice work from Liu, Sullivan, and Liang. It is as sad and affecting as it is thrilling.
