Spent today noticing about 100 connections between SENTIMENTAL VALUE and Trier’s earlier work that I missed in the moment on first and second viewing… And laughing at my worry that maybe I should have rewatched his complete ouevre last week to prepare…as if I’m not a walking encyclopedia for it.

Never happier to be embargoed than when I need more time to think about the new Joachim Trier film.

Not even knees deep in #TIFF25 films but trying to remind myself it’s OK to be the person who didn’t finish the film/walk out of the film. Not every film is for me!

TIFF Platform competition this year feels like a throwback to 2019: - a film from Netflix with a movie star that doesn’t need the platform - a few up & coming women directors I’ve had my eye on - a Cannes film (?! Breaking their world premiere rule for Pellerin) Really gunning for a breakout hit.

Big year for Quebec at the Director’s Fortnight! New films from Anne Émond (Our Loved Ones, Nelly) and Félix Dufour-Laperrière (Archipel)!

I am so excited for the new Maeve Kerrigan! I can also attest to this. I waited way too long to jump on the ship, and started with The Close. Then I binged through the prior 9 books in a matter of weeks and in a totally nonsensical order (I think I worked backwards because the library had those.)

It was the one-two punch of Sam Mendes’s CABARET and his COMPANY with Adrian Lester that made me a diehard Mendes fan (COMPANY also solidified me as an Adrian Lester and Sophie Thompson superfan).

She’s marvelous! She also did a play at the Old Vic with Ben Chaplin and she’s great — I know there’s a recording kicking around because they broadcast it on YouTube during the early pandemic. Worth seeking out!

Not only was Soderbergh savvy enough to put Tom Burke in his new movie, but he also told David Fincher to put Burke in HIS movie years ago.
