Today, the AAUP released the Annual Report on the Economic Status of the Profession, 2025–26. It is sobering. Full-time faculty salaries are down about 0.4% in real, inflation-adjusted terms. Average full-time faculty salaries remain 9.5% below fall 2019 & about 5.8% below fall 2008. 1/

Today, the AAUP Yale Chapter releases our report on The State of Academic Freedom at Yale. Uncertain that university leaders will protect academic freedom when tested, Yale faculty are managing risk alone and making changes that narrow what Yale teaches, researches, and communicates to the world.

Academic Freedom means: *Freedom to discuss all relevant matters in the classroom *Freedom to explore all avenues of scholarship & research *Freedom from censorship/discipline when addressing matters of institutional policy *Freedom from censorship/discipline when speaking as a member of the public.

The US Department of Education is currently overhauling federal accreditation rules for colleges & universities. The April 6, 2026, Proposed Changes to Initial Draft Regulations unacceptably seek to narrow & control what can be taught, learned, & researched on college & university campuses. 🧵 1

We filed suit against the Trump administration (again) today to block the implementation of an unlawful executive order that seeks to undermine inclusion & equal opportunity, threatens government contractors w/ criminal prosecution, & chills protected speech. These are not normal times.

We’re suing the Trump-Vance admin to stop an executive order targeting federal contractors and subcontractors' efforts to promote equal opportunity. This unconstitutional EO threatens civil and criminal prosecution for contractors who don't comply with an anti-DEIA agenda. We’ll fight it in court.

We should probably talk more about how deeply the tentacles of neoliberalism have penetrated higher education. Of course scholars do research in the summer, but this administrative language of ever-increasing productivity is, to be technical about it, icky and alienating
