Trying out making carnitas for the first time tonight. Was surprised how much juice came out of the pork in the Dutch oven (start led with just the juice of a few oranges on the pot). Wishing I had left the pork for another 30min to slow cook, but over all tasting pretty darn good!

Turns out half of perf optimization in Unreal is just finding all the static meshes that have dynamic collision turned on that someone forgot to unset.

Finally got around to getting frames for the art I bought at AniRevo and Pax. I always forget how expensive frames can be, often far exceeding the cost of the art itself.

Of course when I fat-finger a Ctrl-S and insert a random 's' in a middle of source file right before check in, it has to be in a shared library across projects 🤦‍♂️. Watching build failure messages light up Slack like a Christmas tree.

The “Art of Nintendo Power” at PAX was a glorious nostalgia bomb. I vividly remember that Mega Man cover art and had no idea it came from diorama props. Super cute seeing the fan letter illustrations too. @straycatalyst.bsky.social and I got a Gameboy Camera photo at the end of the exhibit.

Went to the Weird Al show with @straycatalyst.bsky.social and some friends yesterday. What an amazing show! 2nd time I’ve seen him perform. Always an impressive musician, but was really blown away by the non-stop costume changes in this show. Seeing “Amish Paradise” in full garb was a delight.

Letting my old-taku nature shine. Finally finished up my DeadBeat cosplay (Mori Calliope fan) in time for Hololive concert up in Vancouver next weekend. 3d print for the mask was about 2.5 days of print time. Finished ventilation fan wiring this evening.

Final calligraphy class of the quarter just wrapped. Got to try syosho (full cursive style) for the final assignment. Super fun but super tough. This is 悠然/yuzen/“majestic”.

There are a ton of these tiny land crabs in the marshlands near Charleston and they are adorable.

At at Mona Lisa themed restaurant in NOLA. They provide crayons to make your own Mona Lisa rendition. Mom made Frida Kahlo-Lisa. @straycatalyst.bsky.social made Pika-Lisa. I tried the avant-garde approach with Gary Busey-Lisa… I am glad I picked a career in Engineering rather than Art 😆

Swamp Boat Tour with @straycatalyst.bsky.social! Met lots of marshmallow loving alligators and a friendly Purple Gallinule named “Fred”. Apparently the same tour company gave the Disney animation team a tour who worked on “Princess and the Frog”.

Just finished “Empire of AI” by Karen Hao. Fascinating deep dive into dark transformation of the AI industry from its initial hopeful promise into the cancerous hyper scaling monster it’s become today. I was particularly surprised by the exploitive potable water usage cloud data centers consume.

Forgot to post last two days. Arrived in New Orleans in Wed. Met up with @straycatalyst.bsky.social at the airport who flew in from Seattle. Best thing so far was the Creole traditions cooking class we took in the French Quarter. Jambalaya came out awesome.

Last day in LA with Mom on coast-to-coast-to-coast trip. Venice beach in the morning, then full day exploring Universal Studios and popping in to Getty Museum. Wish we had more time at the Getty (could easily spend a whole day there).

Day 1 in America coast to coast to coast to coast trip. Starting off with a few days in LA with Mom. So far Santa Monica has definitely been my favorite area. Beach is great. Squirrels are chill.

#Trans folks in the US who are reapplying for their passport to be fixed. Don't bother. Just had an emergency appointment today (I travel on the 30th) and they cannot issue me a corrected #passport. All decisions regarding this 'issue' are on hold until they receive guidance from the head office.

Coming back from a concert at the Showbox, grabbed a night time shot of Pike Place Market. Polyarc’s first office was a block from here. I miss popping into the market for lunch. Despite being a tourist hotspot there are a bunch of legitimately amazing spots to eat.

Recently did a test with my OpenScan Mini (open source 3d photogrammetry capture rig) doing some photogrammetry captures for objects on my set. Was surprised how well it worked. (See thread)

Has anyone tried shipping sake from Japan to WA state? Finding conflicting answers online. Buyee, the proxy service I’m using let me make the purchase and some of the info on there implies that DHL will ship it. Worried once it gets to the warehouse they won’t let me ship it.

It’s funny on my calligraphy corrections the teacher is calling me out on being about to tell I like doing the semi-cursive style better (which is true). Block print style is very important, but boooring lol.

Question for the art community: How do you feel about using AI generated assets for brainstorming commissions. I personally am not ok with using AI stuff in final works, but wondered if it’s ok to use as a tool for a non-art person to communicate the idea they wanted. Can see arguments both ways.

Did a first person PoV recording test in my Meta Quest 3 headset yesterday soldering together control board for OpenScan board. Some interesting problems: * Had to switch to vertical format to not crop PoV center * Lot more distortion in near field * Hard to see small details in headset up close

Playing around with some time lapse capture of some 3d printing. Making parts for a cool open source 3d scanner project I found recently: openscan.eu Circuit boards arrived from Germany today. Looking forward to assembling this guy over the weekend.

Recently took a quick walk with my mom up near her place in Arlington to the Skagit Bay Estuary. One thing I love about the living in the PNW is that you are never more than an hour away from some stunning natural scenery.
