Can I go off for a little bit? I'm not really mad that the game had a game-breaking bug for our reviewer. It happens more than you would like when you review indie games. I am mad that I got ghosted by the publisher when I reached out multiple times across multiple emails about it.

A lot of wonderful people I work with are being shafted yet again with new ‘bonus’ systems that pretty much amount to soft layoffs. I can’t say much more about it without the risk of losing my own livelihood, but all the talented writers affected deserve better.

There is no shortage of brilliant people in games media writing out there. There's just nowhere for them to work because the ecosystem is being sucked by vampire businessman who want to find a way to not pay them or replace us with automated systems

On Thursday evening Valnet issued new contracts to writers at TheGamer instituting a minimum article viewership threshold for payment. Most writers already have pay tied to article performance, but this new system would mean that if a piece didn't get X number of clicks you wouldn't be paid for it.

I don't think games media wants to address how much the space has regressed over the last few years in terms of diversity and opportunity. It was always bad, but this year and last, man, it's just worse.

A lot of good points and conversation in this thread, but I want any new writer, esp. from POC and marginalized communities, to know that JetsonPlaysGames is always open to you. I can't promise the budget is always there (it's out of pocket from me, personally), but we are always open to pitches.

I wasn't plugged in to the games media space at the time, but I assume everyone knew that by "vaulting" so much of the game, Destiny 2 was dooming itself? That it survived as long as it did is nothing short of a miracle and a real testament to the creatives behind it and the community.

The thing with writing about a game, a book, a film, a TV show, whatever, is no matter how critically you approach it or how well you write or how thoughtful you are, you're ultimately marketing. You're carrying water for the thing. You gotta decide whether what you have to say is worth the cost.

I would like to see more reviews for games in long-running series done by people who are not already fans of said games or genres. I really do feel like we have enough from people who are already"bought in".

Kind of just want to vent because I have no idea what to do in this situation. We got a key for a game for review at JPG. Game looked interesting, reviewer was having a good time, etc. But there was a game-breaking bug that prevented progress. Reviewer was motivated enough to try again, but no.

I love indie games, and I am always amazed by what such small teams can do given their time and budget constraints, but I do not think it is useful or helpful to handle them with kid gloves. Don't think of them as precious little babies who need to be coddled. They deserve to be taken seriously.

The Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy playerbase is small enough that you actually can get a feel for how a bunch of the top 200 or so players play and get to recognize them. Really funny that there are just some guys you love to see on the other team instead of yours lmao

I suppose I have a lot of thoughts on the "industry" at large, especially about how the daily production of banal pieces grinds writers down into nothing for nothing, but today is a good reminder of what's good about the space.

I have read several great pieces about games today that have really reinvigorated my desire to get better at it. Some of that is informed by a sense of inadequacy, of course, but that can be a driver rather than a deterrent.
