My brother Dr. Tarek Loubani is back in Canada. He was working as an emergency doctor at Nasser medical complex in Gaza for the past three months. I learn more from him every time I see him. And yes, that is fresh Palestinian za’atar from a dear friend. Free Palestine.

To bear witness to injustice comes with responsibility. The responsibility to act, to take meaningful action. To help change the political and structural conditions that allowed for injustice to occur in the first place.

One week ago, the village chose to stand in solidarity with Palestine for the annual Pride parade. Because the village knows that Pride was and always will be a protest. That from Stonewall to Palestine, resistance is not a crime.

These words were shared today at a vigil for the toxic drug crisis in our city today. I keep thinking about it. Hope is this gritty fighting spirit - a steadfastness.

On this day, 54 years ago, on August 28, 1971, a group of activists protested on Parliament Hill in the first large scale gay rights protest held in Canada. This is why the annual Pride parade happens in August in Ottawa, to honour this tradition of protesting and demanding for equal human rights.
