We have a new paper out in Nature Geoscience about how weak zones in the downgoing Pacific Plate may have caused a slab tear/gap under the Alaska Peninsula that may be linked to high magma flux at Aniakchak and other nearby volcanoes. ⚒️ 🧪 rdcu.be/ew8pz

Quick map of M7.3 earthquake offshore the Alaska Peninsula. Today's earthquake (green) has a very similar focal mechanism to the M7.8 2020 Sand Point event, which was dominantly strike-slip but caused a tsunami. Based on depths of mainshock and early aftershocks, could be an upper plate event. ⚒️

The ~10,000 km³ Wapshilla Ridge Member of the CRFB may have been emplaced in ~ 10 years. It pooled in a basin created by its own crustal dynamics, flowed down the Columbia to the sea, flowed far up several major drainages, intruded marine sediments 100+ miles, and BBQ’d at least one rhino.

This is Paul Claus' Otter out of Ultima Thule Lodge. I had the pleasure of flying with Paul in this plane during my PhD fieldwork. When taking us to a GPS site, he would ask where the helicopter pilot had landed previously and try and get closer to the site. A phenomenal pilot.
