I feel like some of the backlash back when it first came out simply happened because it wasn't Bravely Third. It's a good game, it just tries to be seperate from the Luxendarc saga. Could it better? Definitely. Is it a bad game because of it? Absolutely not.

I think why the tool system of Silksong doesn't click as well for me compared to Hollow Knight's charms is the severe lack of synergy effects. It's still fun, but there was just something fun about seeing what charm combo would have additional effects.

Every time I discover a new area in Silksong and learn what the gimmick is going to be, I get filled with so much dread having to try to get through it.

Team Cherry's idea of difficulty does sometimes boil down locking you in a room with 3-4 enemies that can parry/block your attacks, while their regular attacks magnetise you to them to deal 2 masks at once, and doing that for 3-4 rounds.

Silksong plays like every boss is their dream version.
