One of four Roman emperors to have spent time in York, Septimius Severus died here in 211. At that time, of course, the city was called Eboracum. Severus Hill, west of the city centre, is now home to a water tower and electricity sub-station. It's the memorial he would have wanted, for sure.

Our first chair, William Vernon Harcourt, said we should be called the "Yorkshire Science and Antiquarian Society". That didn't happen; we don't know why. Maybe the founding committee was influenced by other "philosophical societies" that already existed in 1822 and just went with the flow.

Long before T. rex, tyrannosaurs were fluffy little nerds. Like this friend, Dilong paradoxus. They were a turkey-sized tyrannosauroid that lived about 125 million years ago. There are older tyrannosauroids, but Dilong is a great example of what the famous group was like early in its history. 🧪
