Telling someone they need to be more confident will not make them more confident. It may do the opposite if they feel pressure. Give them opportunities to PRACTISE LOOKING & SOUNDING confident, break it down to small steps. This is more likely to help them learn over time how to APPEAR confident.

You learn as much from a mistake that you act on as you do from getting the answer right first time (based on Kornell and Vaughn, 2016)

If a student says, “I can’t do it - it’s really difficult.” We always say, “Yes, it is difficult. But you can do difficult things.” It’s a game changer for lots of young people.

You don’t climb the mountain so people can see you at the top. You climb it to see the view.

On a recent edition of The Happiness Lab Podcast Laurie Santos talked about how we should be more 'The Beatles' and less 'Frozen' when it came to uncomfortable emotions. 'Let it be' > 'Let it go' That struck me as a useful distinction

Being nervous about something doesn't have to mean that you lack confidence in yourself or that you can't do it. It means you really care about doing well. You can feel the adrenaline, which we call 'nerves', without this being a bad thing. Acknowledge the adrenaline & let this focus your efforts.
