Even something like West Wing and its ...interesting... take on the presidency was aspirational for the GS-9s of the 90s who could see an example of "good governance" and feel like they were making a difference in their own alienating jobs. People need the heroic myths.

Even Atticus needed to be appointed to do the right thing. It's not an efficient system that those with privilege sometimes need prodding before sticking their necks out for the marginalized, but sometimes people need that instruction. Some people need that kick in the butt that reveals injustice.

They recognized that they had privilege and they were able to deploy it to actually do good for people in an unfair system. That stuck with me. Hearing Cory Booker speaking on the Capitol, he told a very similar story of a white lawyer who helped his parents buy a house in a segregated community.

White people need an "Atticus" because they need to realize they have some political agency over the marginalized. In school I learned about a group of white architects in apartheid SA who helped build a black community that would otherwise have been unable to navigate the racist state institutions.

No one asked for my hot take but here goes: People need the Superman character because in a society as alienating as ours, people need aspirational figures to feel they can have any influence on it. Superman is an alien, he's distinct from the rest of the world but he loves it and does good in it.
