This is such an important point. The VAST majority of funding for research comes from NIH. Stand Up To Cancer just had their telethon. In 2023 they raised an impressive $60 million for cancer research. But the NCI (at NIH) had a budget of $7.2 billion that year. Charities cannot compete.

FYI to media outlets, you're misleading your readers if you repeat this at face value. There's no lawful way for him to redirect these grants elsewhere. It's a lie to distract from how the GOP budget guts educational funding, including Pell Grants at trade schools.

This is what a rigged economy looks like: In the 1970s, CEOs made 27 times more than the average worker. In the 1980s, CEOs made 48 times more than the average worker. This decade, CEOs are making 354 times more than the average worker. That has got to change.

Biggest mistakes I'm seeing in early reporting (thread): 1. Tariffmageddon isn't over: Lotsa tariffs to account for, but the average tariff rate is only down around one quarter. So most of the pain of Liberation Day is still with us.

We import a boatload of Nickel and Vanilla from Madagascar - not stuff you can grow/mine everywhere. We don’t sell them a much cos the average income is $510 per year. Because Trump’s Tax is based on trade deficit, not tariffs, we’re now slapping a 90% tariff on Madagascar.

If the NIH gets messed up, there is no alternative. Not just in the US, but globally. It is by far the biggest engine of health research in the world. Which is why the idea that US scientists can just do their work elsewhere is a little fanciful.

I keep receiving these emails full of enthusiasm about the 50 alleged NIH study sections that will be (but really are not yet) on the federal register. Folks, council meetings are on an INDEFINITE hold. There is no grant happening. Let's focus on the issue at hand.
