Joint experiments with a large number of different plant genotypes and multiple treatments (here herbivory and moderate drought) require a large number of motivated partners to be in time, accurate and comparable in handling. Not to forget that science can also be a lot of fun😀

The experiments were a joint effort of @chemodiversity.bsky.social Plants were grown in the facilities of @jpschnitzler.net who also had a watchful eye on the root washing process :D @marvin-hildebrandt.bsky.social @robinheinennl.bsky.social

In 2025, our @chemodiversity.bsky.social Researh Unit spent lots of time and effort on a common chemodiversity plasticity experiment, in which three model plants were exposed to similar herbivory and drought treatments. The first resulting paper is out: link.springer.com/article/10.1...

Battling the heat? Outdoors today in London, most are seeking the balm of tree shade. But what about the trees themselves? Some will survive the heat better in the future. One of them is the Judas Tree, Cercis siliquastrum. This beautiful image is from Sibthorp and Smith's Flora Graeca (1806-1840).

Zoé Hentschel updated our group on the status of her ant work this morning. She is applying urban niche models to her ant occurrence data to understand whether species are winners or losers with regards to specific urban environmental variables, such as greenness, imperviousness or temperature.

A short piece about our recent Nature Eco Evo paper on Emergent properties in the chemodiversity landscape. (ignore the German title of the web page, this is an English language piece)

I don't think I have shared this series before either; this is a red-footed falcon female grabbing a mayfly out of the air and eating it on the wing. Unfortunately she was quite far away, but she came closer afterwards (but I did not manage to capture such a moment again).

In the next category of 'almost all the same:' pipits. Pretty beautiful birds, I must admit, but I certainly need habitat and a bit of song to understand what I am looking at for these. I am still missing quite a few of these pipits, so there is work to do...

Little brown birds. The leaf warblers are often ignored a bit. All the same. All brownish green or greenish brown. Hard to tell apart without song. But I quite like collecting them. And honestly, I find them quite beautiful #birds.

Some other #birds seen this weekend. Forgive the oddly lit pictures. Some were taken during heavy cloud cover and early in the morning.

Crested tits are such cool birds. I find them usually quite shy, but this one forgot all about it as it was driven by the urge to feed its chicks. Almost as if I wasn't there!

Important piece, and something that many overlook(ed). I think we are largely already living in AI monocultures in large parts of the internet. Note how even serious content nowadays starts with bullet point emoticons: the cheap AI look is everywhere.

On another - still chemodiverse - note: we started two new greenhouse experiments today to support Elikplim Setordjie's PhD work! Today we transplanted rooted rhizomatic cuttings from many chemotype lines into their own pots, and these multiplied lines will be used later this spring.

We have been doing quite some chemodiversity work in recent years, but often focus on the plot-level environment. However, we also have a pretty neat stock-garden of Tansy lines, where last summer we did an intensive sampling (17 events) of plant growth and insect colonization. (1/2)
