Flipped Learning: A Guide For Higher Education Faculty, second edition interview form Thanks for your interest in the forthcoming second edition of Flipped Learning: A Guide For Higher Education Faculty. The author, Robert Talbert, is looking to interview instructors who have used some form of flipped learning and in some capacity in their classes, and sharing those interviews as practical real-life examples in the book. For our purposes, we define flipped learning as a pedagogical approach in which direct instruction moves from the group learning space to the individual learning space, and the resulting group space is repurposed and refocused for active learning and engagement. (This is adapted from this definition; see this article for more.) Examples include: Removing lectures from standard class meetings and putting them into video posted online for students to watch before class, then using the time freed up in class for active learning activities instead of lecture. Having students run a simulation or play a game prior to class to introduce a new concept, then using class time for deeper engagement and higher-level applications on that concept. Having students read and collaboratively annotate an online text prior to a class meeting, then using the class meeting for debate about some of the elements of that text. Examples do not include assigning pre-class reading without structured activities, and then discussing the reading in class. While there are merits to this approach, it is not considered "flipped learning" under this definition unless there are structured activities (such as guided reading questions that students submit, or collaborative annotation) to accompany the pre-class work. Again, if you are using a pedagogical technique that could be considered "flipped learning" under the above definition, you are warmly invited to be interviewed about your experiences. The author is especially interested in examples from instructors outside the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) disciplines.
