I hadn't read this 2020 essay, but it's exceptional. The bonds between the Māori and their land Aotearoa are woven through long years of memory and song. So also Middle-earth and its invented peoples. But Aotearoa is NOT Middle-earth, and forgetting that risks erasing the reality with the fiction.

I think after I finish reading ‘Fellowship’ and the rest of the main trilogy, I’m going to read ‘Beren and Lúthien’ first before the Silmarillion and the other Great Tales to just have my heart shattered.
