Resumé
So this is Festive Perineum, and what have you done? Another year (nearly) over, and a new one (nearly) just begun. Comparing the No-Manâs Land (No Womanâs Land) between Christmas and New Year to the useless patch of skin between the genitals and anus is so on point you can see why its caught on so, canât you? Better than âTwixtmasâ, which is so twee it makes my teeth ache.

Fairytale in New York by The Pogues featuring Kirsty McColl (1987) Written by Jem Finer & Shane McGowan I know there isnât a 25th day of Advent, so donât start Iâm doing an extra one if you donât like it you can pĂłg mo thĂłin. Consider it a late Christmas present. Youâre welcome! Efforts had been made to make Christmas Day as friction-free as possible.

Wonderful Christmastime by Paul McCartney (1979) Written by Paul McCartney Yes, this one is more than a little bit late. Soz. Annoying as I managed a 23 day streak throughout the rest of December. What can I say? Actual Christmassing got in the way. A brief comment on McCartneyâs âWonderful Christmastimeâ: itâs definitely not the worst Christmas song released by an ex-Beatle, but itâs not a patch on his Frog Chorus.

The Cat Carol by Meryn Cadell (2000) Written by Ted Evans One last serious chore before Christmas: taking Tarragon to the vets to get his annual check-up and shots. Not my chore, to be fair. Caroline was doing the cat wrangling, caging and transport. Tarragon cordially loathes going to the vets. He was a sickly kitten and suffered many visits in his formative years.

Pass the Bottle â A Christmas Song (Jethro Tull, 2017) By Ian Anderson & Jethro Tull Iâve previously mentioned the Marriott Hotel, Swindon, in relation to Christmases Past. Its stagnant halls were the location of a number of work Christmas parties over the years. I also worked there for a time, during university holidays, including Christmas holidays 1994. I was going to write about an incident involving an industrial bottle opener, spilt wine and fisticuffs that happened during the Marriott Hotel staff Christmas party 1994.

Last Christmas by Wham Written by George Michael I turned 50 this year. Thatâs a fat old chunk of turbulent history Iâve inexpertly navigated without dying. That is inexplicable. Iâm a ticking timebomb of bad habits, questionable choices and unfortunate opinions. The idea that I even managed to manoeuvre my way out of puberty alive, never mind surviving half a century, is an act of low comedy bordering on farce.

If We Make It Through December by Merle Haggard (1973) (Written by Merle Haggard) Is it strange to feel wistful about an escalator? The escalator at my office*, my employerâs* head office, has been out-of-order since literally before Covid. Circa 2019 at a rough estimate. Thatâs a long time for a large national organisation to have a duff escalator. I appreciate that it wasnât a massive priority during a global epidemic, but using that as an excuse five years down the line seems excessive.
