In Santa Maria Novella, Florence, Masaccio's Trinity is under restoration. For a small fee, you can go up the scaffolding and have a close look (priceless!). The two details here are the presumed patrons whose identification remains uncertain. They sure gave us a good one.

Medieval landlords regularly collected eels as rent. But they didn't always eat them. Sometimes they bought things w/ their eels. In the early 1200s the Ramsey monks rented a local causeway at the yearly rate of 1 pair of scarlet pants, 2 pounds of pepper & ginger, & 1,000 eels. 🗃️🧪
