The area around ' The Old Post Office' near Milk Street in Shrewsbury is a hotbed for spirits. A ghostly blacksmith is still heard hammering away, the ghost of a woman murdered nearby is seen, and though dead, 'Lavender Sally', a flower seller still peddles her wares.

Alveley has been a village since 50AD. The current church St Mary's church was built on the site of an earlier Saxon one. Inside the churchyard is the remains of what is thought to be a Saxon preaching cross. Preaching crosses were used as a place for public sermons or announcements. #history

John Mirk of Lilleshall Abbey wrote in the 1300s of the three fires made on St Johns Eve. One of Clean bones, to purify and deter spirits. The second a wakefire, made of wood, the social circle of warmth. the final was of bones and wood, a ritual blaze called St Johns fire. #Folklore #Midsummer

Above the porch of St. Peter's Church, Edgmond, is a medieval carving that depicts a pair of children. It is not known who the children were or their significance, but local legend says that they commemorate two children who are buried in the churchyard. 💚 #churches #history #medieval

Sycharth Castle is exactly the kind of site that reminds me why I love medieval history. Recorded in the Domesday Book, it later became the home of Owain Glyndŵr and a centre of power where bards and poets gathered. Burned by Prince Henry in 1403, it was sadly never rebuilt. #history #medieval

In the north wall of the chancel of St. Edith's Church, Eaton Under Heywood is a 14th-century wooden effigy tomb. There are only a handful of examples of such in Shropshire (perhaps as few as three), and they are rare across the country. It is not clear who the effigy depicts, but he was a civilian.

A little bit of graffiti from Melverley Church. The original church was burnt down by Owain Glyndwr's armies. It was then rebuilt in 1406 from local oak. The pews date from the early 1700s. I think it looks like a 'fox and geese' game board. How wonderful is it? ✨️ #Folklore #History #Shropshire

In the chancel window of Castle Frome church, there is a small sculpted figure, clad in mail, holding a heart in his hands. It is believed to commemorate a heart burial, linked to the De Lacey family. It has been suggested it symbolises a member of the family who died on Crusade. #history #churches

I have always loved St Bartholomew's Church in Tong. It's a building with a rich history. Founded by Lady Isabella de Pembrugge, her tomb can still be seen. I noticed today it bears a hexafoil, an apotropaic symbol believed to ward off evil and provide protection. #hexafoil #apotropaic #Folklore

At St. Edith's, Eaton under Heywood, there is the most wonderful apotropaic marking I've seen. The "W" or "VV" symbol, linked to the Virgin Mary, was believed to invoke her protection. At St Peter's Church, Diddlebury, there are two carvings on the south wall that have been suggested to be Sheela Na Gigs. Their status as Sheela Na Gigs has been heavily debated due to how worn the carvings are. It is intetesting to consider the possibility. #medieval #churches #churchcrawling
