I've found the most interesting account of a community's response to a witch from 1828 Shrewsbury. It's intriguing, tragic, and an insight into the realities of life on the fringes of acceptability. I am hoping to have it added to my article on shropshire witches this week. Im excited to share it!

Tommy Rogers (b.1849) was one of the last Severn watermen. He was a coracle maker, poacher, and larger-than-life Ironbridge character. Known for his expert knowledge of the Severn, he saved 8 lives and recovered more than 80 bodies alongside his son from the river Severn. #Shropshire #Ironbridge

Thomas Light was a conjurer who lived in the early 19th century at High Ercall. He consulted the stars, summoned spirits, and satisfied the needs of locals with both curses and cures. He was often heard wrestling with supernatural beings and even the Devil at night. 🌙 #Folklore #Shropshire #Satan

Church Preen Church is Norman in origin and was founded by Cluniac monks. Its ancient yew, dating to around 457 AD, was once described as being one of England's noblest. Yew trees symbolize death, rebirth, and protection. In Shropshire, they had healing properties and were guardians. #folklore

The Parish Church of St. Peter Cound is wonderful for many reasons. It is home to this rather wonderful tub font, which is believed to be 12th century in origin. The font is tub-shaped and carved with rosettes and foliage. It is still used for Christenings. #history #churches #Shropshire

There is something so beautiful about Holy Trinity Churchyard in Coalbrookdale. I could get lost in that vast sea of green. The whole Gorge is a powerful landscape. It's a place of miners, brickmakers and foundrymen.The land remembers its history and it implores us to do the same. ❤️ #history

Interestingly, Tommy, his son Harry and his grandson Eustace never asked for payment for the grim task of recovering those lost to the river. They saw it as their duty. These larger than life figures are so important to local history. I am currently researching them and cant wait to share more!
