We are in dire need of a games formalism movement.

Digital games can be distilled to only having five verbs, they are: Move, Jump, Shoot, Select, and Observe. Innovative mechanics in games are simply combinations and sequences of those verbs in patterns you've never considered.

This is a heartening read as someone who is feeling burnt out creatively, due in no small part to feeling walled-in by tools. It’s inspiring and I would love to read more about how others are using lighter weight frameworks or hand-rolled solutions. Even more so for fantasy console devs.

Folks enjoy stroking their own ego whenever they think they understand how clever the artist is. If the artist shows the “answer”, they don’t get the dopamine hit of teasing something out of the piece. They’ve chosen to wall themselves into puzzle boxes instead of engaging with the form.

The funny thing about this is that creatives viscerally feel the dissonance of not being capable of realizing, or simply not wanting to realize, an artistic vision. I think the folks in this camp of not wanting to learn, not wanting to create also do not feel deeply compelled to break their stasis.

Switched to Codeberg, now I am happy to vouch for it. So far, a great alternative to Github. Codeberg pages works great, and commits light up little calendar boxes. All I could ever need. Going to host my new blog here and use it for programming projects and any open source games.

On Sunday, the best QB of the modern era and the greatest lyricist of all time will be staged on national television. I sincerely hope both of them have had enough of this shit.
