is it a right conclusion that Spelunky HD still feels pretty distinct from modern rogue---- type games? It feels much more in conversation with roguetype games compared to the usual metaprogression type game. it makes me think about roguetype design (although i'm attached to fixed world design..)

Not that youth attachment is good, but it's likely bc Pokemon (the game that the article mentions kids actually playing) is heavily marketed to kids and a fam-friendly brand (toys, merch, anime). FF/DQ now are often gacha spinoffs, MMO, or games targeted towards nostalgic or older audiences

i feel sorry for everyone going all why is there no manga/anime with no trans chars when there exists accessible mediums like visual novels where that actually happens cause we can tell our own stories entirely independently without relying on billion dollar studios to fund and censor the projects

Some people, if they don't get where something is coming from feel like the narrative is either just random or that they are not "smart" enough to piece it together. It's not random, it's very purposeful and interconnected, but it's also not necessary to see story as a lore puzzle to be solved.

Many members of the international games industry are skipping the 2026 Game Developers Conference because of the growing ICE presence and other concerns.

TBH i think the how the Story Thing in Angeline Era Recontextualizes Everything is pretty unprecedented for game storytelling, even misunderstood by experts! We (and marina especially) should get credit for some of those narrative swings. especially in terms of density of race/religion/history

I did not know this about ds2! But it makes sense with all the torches...esp e.g. The Gutter. Wild to think we could have gotten Brightis 2. Thinking about the fallout of Dark Souls 1, it's probably the most unfortunate how much its fame standardized a previously varied genre (action adventure)

Thinking about Memorization+Build-focused here has me wanting a Dark Souls-like that defocuses the bosses in favor of focusing more on "solving" bonfire-to-bonfire runs

Multiple players have cleared the challenges in Angeline Era even I wasn't sure were possible! (Level 1 Melos Trick Boss Rush and All Scales on max difficulty). I have concluded that the action design of the game is A Success.
